Week of October 15th

We had a great week together full of buddies, birthdays and mice!

Mice and motorcycles were on everyone’s mind this week as we enjoyed our first class novel study of The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary. We learned new vocabulary, followed plot development and discussed character traits. The children read independently, with buddies and in small groups. At the end of the week, small groups worked on a “book-in-a-bag” report to summarize all they learned from the book. It was a great preview of the work they will do for their fall book project.

We continued writing personal narratives in our writer’s notebooks. We are becoming more aware that the events in our lives make wonderful stories! We are working on strategies to help us when we are stuck and can’t think of a story to write. We think of our favorite people and, then, think of three specific events with him/her. Then we ‘zoom’ in and tell all the details of one specific time with this special person. This works for our favorite places too! We are continuing to work on conventions and subject/verb agreement as we develop our ideas.

In math we are continuing to work on computation of double and triple-digit numbers. We are making sure we keep all the digits in the correct place value as we regroup across the places. Xtra math is a hit! Each day several children have the opportunity to practice quick computation facts. Please encourage your child to practice at home as well.

We enjoyed time with our Pre-K buddies today! We helped them make jack-o-lanterns for Halloween and read them Halloween stories. Then we sang songs and enjoyed a sweet treat!

Fr. Michael visited this week as well. He talked to us about sacraments, explaining the definition of a sacrament and helping us understand the gift of each sacrament.

As the leaves are beginning to change, Mrs. Fox has begun practicing for the Christmas Concert. Thank you for returning the signed song packets. If you have not sent in a blank CD, please do so next week.
